This article highlight the process of community empowerment conducted by the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Sociology students on the Ngelorejo Village Family Welfare Development Organization or Organisasi Pembinaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (PKK). This empowerment is an activity that aims to improve the ability in processing convection waste into a handicraft of doormats that has a sale value. The economic of prosperity in Ngelorejo Village is behind the students’ initiative to conducted economic programs based on empowerment. The members of PKK hoped that is increasing in more productive activities. This research uses qualitative research methods with the theory of community empowerment by using a sustainable livelihoods approach. Data was collected through interviews, written document searches in the form of books and articles, observations, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and data analysis. Furthermore, the management of data follows scientific procedures by classifying data, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the existence of an empowerment program pioneered by students had a positive impact on the organization in improving skills to create an economic craft so that it could be a business reference for increasing the productivity of their members. This activity theoretically supports many theories about the importance of sustainability in empowerment by directly involving the community. They are no longer the object but are simultaneously the subject of empowerment.
