Social Media and the Hijrah Phenomenon: Construction of Islamic Identity on Social Media in Indonesia

Abstract


The phenomenon of hijrah is a reality of religious understanding that has attracted the attention of academics to study it. Many studies have examined this phenomenon from the point of view of the behavior of individuals who are members of the hijrah community. From the point of view of the relationship between the phenomenon of hijrah and group and personal identity, mass media, especially social media, are considered capable of forming identity with the language or symbols used. The continuous socialization of symbols in media content is considered capable of shaping the reader's meaning and being able to create legitimacy for identity. This paper is an analysis to reveal how Islam is displayed in the language narrative used in the content on the social media accounts of the hijrah community.
