DRIVER’S SLEEPINESS EVALUATION ON REAL ROAD DRIVING BASED ON FITNESS FOR DUTY AND REAL TIME MONITORING

Abstract

One of major contributing factor in many motor vehicle accident is sleepiness. Sleepiness is a complex multi-dimensional phenomenon hence it is unlikely to be appropriately assessed by one single indicator of sleepiness or test. The purpose of the present study is to investigate if a combination indicators of sleepiness can be used as a fit-for-duty-test that is capable of assessing if a driver is fit to drive. There were two devices used in this study, namely PVT and B-ORS. Both devices would be validated against subjective measures of sleepiness. Twelve participants (M ± SD; 35.6 ± 3.4 years) were asked to drive a car from Bandung to Bekasi (110 kilometers) and return to Bandung in the afternoon. During the experiment, subjects were recorded by video camera and reported KSS value every 20 minutes. Subjects also performed the 5 min Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) 6 times while they stopped driving. Each parameter’s value were tested using nonparametric or distribution-free procedures. The main findings of this study were fitness-for-duty test and real time monitoring may be used as driver’s sleepiness detectors and both methods, i.e. PVT and B-ORS, significantly correlate with self-reported sleepiness’s score.
