PEMBACAAN EVALUATIF HILMI ALI SYA’BAN ATAS NARASI KISAH NABI YUSUF DAN SULAIMAN DALAM AL-QUR’AN DAN ALKITAB
Main Article Content
Abstract

This study aims to analyze Hilmi Ali Sya’ban’s evaluative reading of the narratives of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) and Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) as presented in the Qur’an and the Bible. This evaluative approach reveals how Sya’ban utilizes sources from both scriptures to construct a more comprehensive narrative, emphasizing corrective, complementary, and interpretative aspects in the process. The study identifies the forms of Sya’ban’s evaluative reading, demonstrating a creative response to narratives deemed to have incomplete elements (indeterminate aspects), as theorized by Roman Ingarden and Wolfgang Iser in reception theory. Using a qualitative method based on library research, the study explores the factors underlying Sya’ban’s narrative choices, including the horizon of expectations and the context of Islamic tradition. The findings indicate that Sya’ban’s evaluative reading leverages the Bible to complement or critique Qur’anic narratives, thereby producing a narrative that not only strengthens the Islamic perspective but also fosters a dialogical space between traditions, enriching religious studies. These findings highlight the importance of an intertextual approach in understanding the relationship between interfaith narratives more profoundly and relevantly.
