Abstract: This study examines the development of coffee cultivation as a colonial plantation commodity, as well as the local tradition of “manten kopi” in the Blitar region, particularly in Nglegok Subdistrict. The introduction of coffee to the Blitar region is inextricably linked to colonial agrarian policies, particularly the cultuurstelsel and the Agrarische Wet of 1870, which opened opportunities for plantation investment and spurred the establishment of several large plantations such as Karangredjo, Gogo-niti, and Karanganjar. In addition to its economic impact, the presence of colonial plantations also shaped social patterns and gave rise to the “manten kopi” tradition. This article aims to deepen academic understanding of the history of coffee’s introduction to Blitar. Furthermore, this study contributes to enriching the scientific documentation regarding the stages of the Manten Kopi tradition and reveals the symbolic values that represent the process of syncretism between Islamic teachings and Javanese culture implied throughout the ritual. This study employs historical research methods, including the heuristic stage, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data collection was conducted through literature review and fieldwork to obtain relevant primary and secondary sources. The results of the study indicate that the Manten Kopi tradition is not merely a symbolic procession preceding the harvest but a form of local wisdom that has existed since the colonial era. This tradition serves to maintain the community’s relationship with nature, strengthen social cohesion, and serve as a cultural identity for the people of Nglegok that continues to be preserved amid modernization.
