Journal History
• 2018 — Living Islam: Journal of Islamic Discourse was established and published by the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Thought, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta; P-ISSN: 2621-6582, E-ISSN: 2621-6590.
• Since its initial publication — Living Islam has been registered as a Crossref member; since the first issue all articles have been assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), and the journal has been indexed in Garuda and Google Scholar, as well as being available and searchable through the Dimensions database.
• 2018–2024 — From Vol. 1 No. 1 & No. 2 (2018) to Vol. 7 No. 2 (2024), the journal published articles focusing on kajian keislaman (Islamic studies).
• 2020 — Obtained accreditation at rank 4 (SINTA 4) based on the Decree of the Director General of Research Strengthening and Development, Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia, Number 85/M/KPT/2020.
• 2024 — Reaccredited to rank 3 (SINTA 3) based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Number 72/E/KPT/2024 dated 1 April 2024, which is valid for Volume 6 Number 1 of 2023 up to Volume 10 Number 2 of 2027; the accreditation certificate can be downloaded here.
• Since 2025 — Adopted a custom OJS theme to improve the readability of the journal webpage, the clarity of information for authors and readers, and conformity with the criteria of national and international indexing services.
• Since Vol. 8 No. 1 (2025) — Updated the manuscript template to the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) structure to strengthen the transparency of methods, the traceability of the research process, and the clarity of scientific contributions. Since this issue, all articles have been published in English and are published as gold open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.
• Repositioning of aims and scope (Vol. 8 No. 1 (2025)) — Revised the aims and scope to affirm the journal’s scholarly distinction and niche compared to similar publications in the field of Islamic studies. The previously broad focus on “Islamic studies” was redirected to an interdisciplinary focus on the philosophical dimensions of Islam, lived Islam, ethics and social justice, environmental sustainability, digital ethics, and the interconnectedness of Islam with the fields of education, technology, psychology, and public policy.
The journal is published twice a year and welcomes submissions from a diverse international authorship, supported by an editorial board with expertise in Islamic philosophy, religious studies, and related fields across the humanities and social sciences.
The journal is committed to rigorous peer review, international authorship, and relevance to a global readership in Islamic studies, Islamic philosophy, and related fields.
