“Kuat Mlarat” di Pondok Pesantren Kuno Cibuk, Yogyakarta sebagai Resistansi Konsumerisme Modern

Abstract: This study investigates the cultural resistance of Santri toward modern consumerism within the broader context of neoliberal economic culture. Using a case study of Pondok Pesantren Kuno Cibuk in Sleman, Yogyakarta, the research examines how Sufi values—such as zuhud and the local maxim “kuat mlarat”—shape a distinctive pattern of consumption characterized by simplicity, spirituality, and collectivity. In contrast to the hegemonic market culture that constructs false needs and consumption-based identities, santri embody an ascetic ethos rooted in pesantren tradition and the internalization of classical Islamic teachings. The findings reveal that santri are not passive consumers; rather, they exercise agency and resistance through the pesantren habitus, which emphasizes moderation, self-discipline, and the pursuit of barakah (divine blessing). Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study demonstrates that pesantren culture offers an alternative ethic of consumption that is spiritually grounded and socially sustainable. Furthermore, this alternative ethic serves as an implicit ideological critique of the global capitalist logic that shapes contemporary consumer behavior.
Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas resistansi budaya konsumsi santri terhadap konsumerisme modern dalam konteks ekonomi neoliberal dengan mengambil studi kasus di Pondok Pesantren Kuno Cibuk, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana nilai-nilai tasawuf, khususnya zuhud dan slogan “kuat mlarat” sebagai laku prihatin menjadi determinan penting dalam membentuk pola konsumsi santri yang sederhana, spiritual, dan kolektif. Di tengah hegemoni budaya pasar yang membentuk kebutuhan palsu (false need) dan identitas berbasis konsumsi, santri justru menunjukkan sikap asketis yang berakar pada tradisi dan internalisasi nilai-nilai keIslaman klasik. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa santri bukanlah konsumen pasif, tetapi aktor yang memiliki daya resistansi melalui habitus pesantren yang menekankan kesederhanaan, pengendalian diri, dan keberkahan. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologi, artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa budaya pesantren mampu membangun etika konsumsi alternatif yang lebih berkelanjutan secara spiritual dan sosial. Hal ini sekaligus menjadi kritik ideologis terhadap logika konsumsi kapitalistik global yang mendominasi kehidupan modern.
