Abstract

The pangasius fillet processing industry generates a substantial volume of organic waste, such as bones, heads, viscera, abdominal fat, and meat trimmings, most of which has not been utilized optimally. This condition also occurs at Fiosa MSMEs in Pekanbaru City, which processes pangasius fillet with a capacity of approximately one tonne per day and therefore generates waste amounting to around 50–65% of the total raw material. The limited knowledge of the business owner and workers regarding the potential use of this waste means that most of it is sold only as animal feed with low economic value. This community service activity aims to improve the partner’s knowledge and understanding of the utilization of pangasius fillet processing waste as a value-added product through outreach based on the transfer of science and technology. The implementation methods comprised a field survey, identification of the partner’s problems, interactive outreach, discussion, and evaluation using a questionnaire distributed to the owner and workers of the MSME. The results show an increase in the partner’s knowledge of the potential to convert waste into various economically valuable products, such as high-calcium bone meal, fish oil, and feed raw material, as well as a better understanding of sustainable waste management and the circular economy. The partner also showed strong enthusiasm for developing  waste-derived products and expects continued assistance for the implementation of waste processing technology. This activity demonstrates that outreach is an effective form of science and technology transfer for strengthening community capacity to support waste management that is more productive, economically valuable, and environmentally friendly.
