Abstract

The tragedy of the shooting of Malala Yousafzai by the Taliban army in 2012 opened the eyes of the world that the suppression of women's rights under the pretext of religion or culture must be resisted. As a Muslim women activist, Malala has contributed in the Islamic world, particularly in voicing women's rights to education and roles in the public sphere. The emergence of Malala played a role in shifting the negative stereotypes of the western world towards Islam in treating women. For a long time the western world assumed that Islam was discriminatory towards women, this is due to Western media coverage of Islam which often discusses distortions and misinterpretations of gender texts against the Qur'an and Hadith. This paper is intended to see the role of Malala Yousafzai in changing the negative view of the western world towards Islam in treating women. The method used is the phenomonological analysis of the Malala case and analysis of the literature on gender. The results of the study showed that the negative view of the western world regarding Islamic treatment of women is based on blind cynicism and religious fanaticism and the lack of dialogue on religious texts about gender. The emergence of Malala Yousafzai provided space for the world to dialogue religious texts that were considered gender biased. Basically, Islam has placed men and women in proportional equality. Historically, the rise of Islam has succeeded in elevating women to a high position.
