Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the integration of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the concept of niat (intention) in shaping the learning motivation of Biology Education students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. SDT identifies the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs autonomy, competence, and relatedness as the source of high-quality motivation, while the concept of niat in the Islamic intellectual tradition positions inner orientation and spirituality as the foundation of any deed, including learning. Employing a convergent mixed-methods design, the study involved 58 second-semester students who completed both Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, and qualitative data thematically. The findings reveal that students interpret niat not merely as a cognitive plan, but as an inner drive and a worship-oriented stance that sustains motivational resilience. The satisfaction of autonomy (mean 4.00), competence, and relatedness (mean 4.26) strengthened learning enthusiasm, and most students (mean 4.41) believed that personal intention and the learning environment are interconnected. The results affirm that niat functions as the core of internalized autonomous motivation, while support for autonomy, competence, and relatedness provides the social context that nurtures it, so that integrating both produces more meaningful and sustainable learning motivation.
