Abstract

This study evaluates the potential of Pemedengan Hill, East Lombok, Indonesia, as a site for rukyatulhilal
(crescent Moon observation) by integrating geographical, meteorological, and astronomical analyses. This
field study uses data collected through observation and documentation. Geographically, the site offers a
western horizon view within an azimuth range of 240o 300o, although Mount Agung obstructs views around
azimuth 272o. Meteorological analysis indicates generally low rainfall conditions during the analyzed period,
supporting the site’s potential for crescent observation. Astronomical analysis used SunCalc and MoonCalc
to determine the Sun and Moon azimuth and altitude at local sunset on six observation dates. The results
show that the Moon was below the horizon in June and August, while it remained above the horizon in
May, July, September, and October. Based on the altitude parameter, July and October showed more
favorable geometric conditions, with lunar altitudes of 3.97o and 4.81o, respectively. These findings indicate
that Pemedengan Hill has potential for crescent observation, although a comprehensive visibility assessment
requires additional astronomical and observational parameters, particularly elongation and atmospheric
conditions.
