Abstract: This research is driven by the need to preserve cultural herritage embodied in ancient manuscripts to understand the values of cultural openness in the past amid the pressure of colonialism. One of the manuscripts is Serat Dyamasastra which provides a historical record of leadership practices in Mangkunegaran Principality. This research aims at examining the consept of religious tolerance during the administration of KGPAA Mangkunegara VI and to explore the role of the King in maintaining the continuity of the principality through such an adaptive approach. To achieve these objectives, this study employs the historical method, which consists of five stages: topic selection, heuristics, source verification, interpretation, and historiography. The study utilizes Soerjono Soekanto theory (Role Theory) as primary analytical framework to analyze the King’s role, while phenomenology and hermeneutic approaches are employed to elucidate historical phenomena and interpret the manuscript. The findings demonstrate that Serat Dyamasastra provides reliable historical evidence of religious tolerance practices during the reign of Mangkunegara VI (1896–1916 CE). The dynamic of the King’s reign, ranging from overcoming the financial crises and abdicate the throne and relocate to Surabaya, demonstrated that religious tolerance and cultural openness were deliberately preserved through this manuscript as strategic means of safeguarding Javanese cultural identity and ensuring the continuity of the Mangkunegaran Principality amid the strong hegemony of Dutch colonial rule.
