Author Guidelines
Journal of Integrative Islamic Medicine (JIIM) adheres to international standards of publication ethics, transparent authorship, biomedical reporting, and responsible research communication. These Author Guidelines outline the technical and structural requirements that must be fulfilled before a manuscript is submitted through Open Journal Systems (OJS).
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts comply with the journal's requirements concerning formatting, article length, abstract structure, article types, tables and figures, reference style, research ethics, reporting guidelines, and disclosure policies. Ethical responsibilities are outlined in the Publication Ethics Statement , while authorship eligibility, author order, contributor roles, and the responsibilities of the corresponding author are detailed in the Authorship Criteria .
JIIM accepts manuscript submissions exclusively through the journal's OJS platform. Manuscripts submitted by email or other channels will not be processed. Submission indicates that the work is original, is not under consideration elsewhere, complies with applicable ethical requirements, and does not contain fabricated data, false references, undisclosed conflicts of interest, or prohibited uses of artificial intelligence.
Manuscript Format
- Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.docx) format using the latest JIIM article template.
- Manuscripts may be written in English or Indonesian. Authors are responsible for ensuring clarity and linguistic consistency.
- Use clear, professional academic language appropriate to the discipline. First-person expressions may be used when methodologically appropriate, but unnecessary personal or promotional language should be avoided.
- Use internationally recognized scientific terminology and define abbreviations upon first use.
Article Length and Title
Full manuscripts should generally contain approximately 4,000 to 5,000 words, including the abstract, main text, references, tables, figure captions, and appendices, unless a particular article type requires different specifications. Editors may permit justified variations according to the research design.
Titles should generally consist of approximately 15 to 20 words and must be concise, informative, specific, and free from unsupported claims. Where relevant, the research design should be identifiable from the title.
Author Information
- Enter all authors in OJS in the intended order of publication.
- Provide each author's full name, institutional affiliation, country, institutional email address where available, and ORCID iD.
- Use the affiliation where the research was primarily conducted. An additional current affiliation may be provided separately when appropriate.
- All individuals meeting the authorship criteria must be listed as authors. Contributors who do not qualify for authorship may be acknowledged with their consent.
- Gift authorship, guest authorship, honorary authorship, and ghost authorship are prohibited.
Research Funding
Authors must disclose all sources of financial and material support, including the full name of the funding organization and grant number, where applicable. If no specific funding was received, the following statement may be used:
"This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors."
Non-financial support, including facilities, samples, equipment, or professional assistance, must also be disclosed where relevant.
Generative Artificial Intelligence and AI-Assisted Tools
AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Limited use for language editing, formatting, or other non-substantive assistance may be permitted subject to human verification. Substantive use of AI in writing, analysis, code generation, image creation or modification, or other research activities must be transparently disclosed in the Methods, Acknowledgments, or another appropriate section.
Authors must verify AI-assisted outputs, including references, calculations, and interpretations. Confidential patient or participant data must not be uploaded to publicly accessible AI services. Fabricated references, false data, undisclosed AI-generated content, or AI-assisted manipulation intended to mislead readers are prohibited.
Research Involving Human Participants
- Report approval from the relevant Research Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board, including the committee's name and approval number, where applicable.
- If the research is exempt from formal ethics review, explain the basis for the exemption and identify the authority granting it.
- Describe informed consent and, where relevant, assent and guardian consent for children or participants requiring additional protection.
- Explain anonymization procedures and safeguards for privacy and confidentiality.
- Obtain consent for publication when quotations, photographs, clinical images, pedigrees, videos, or other information could identify an individual.
Clinical Trials, Protocols, and Data
Clinical trials must be prospectively registered in an appropriate public clinical trial registry. The registration number must be included in the manuscript. Clinical trial reports must be consistent with the registered protocol and prespecified outcomes, while unplanned changes must be explained.
Manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement where applicable. Data sharing must comply with ethical approval, informed consent, privacy and confidentiality obligations, institutional regulations, and applicable laws. Clinical trial reports must include an appropriate data-sharing statement.
Structured Abstract and Keywords
Original research articles must include a structured abstract with the following headings:
- Purpose
- Design/methodology/approach
- Findings
- Research implications
Where required by the article type, clinical manuscripts may adapt these headings to biomedical reporting conventions, provided that the same substantive information is retained. Abstracts must be accurate, self-contained, and consistent with the main text.
Include a maximum of 12 concise keywords accurately representing the manuscript. Where appropriate, authors are encouraged to use recognized biomedical indexing terminology, including terms compatible with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) .
Article Types
Authors must select the article type most appropriate to their manuscripts. JIIM may accept the following categories, subject to the journal's OJS configuration and applicable editorial policies:
- Original Article: Reports original quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, biomedical, clinical, public health, or educational research.
- Systematic Review and Meta-analysis: Synthesizes evidence through transparent and reproducible processes of searching, selection, critical appraisal, and analysis.
- Review Article: Presents a critical and scholarly synthesis of a clearly defined topic.
- Case Report or Case Series: Reports clinically or scientifically informative cases with appropriate patient consent and adherence to CARE guidelines where applicable.
- Medical and Health Professions Education Article: Reports research or innovation related to education, curricula, assessment, professionalism, or educational technology.
- Brief Report or Short Communication: Presents focused findings suitable for concise communication.
- Perspective or Viewpoint: Presents evidence-based scholarly arguments on relevant issues and must not be represented as original empirical research.
- Study Protocol: Describes a planned study using an appropriate protocol reporting guideline where applicable.
Reporting Guidelines
Authors must follow reporting guidelines appropriate to their research designs. Relevant examples include:
- CONSORT for randomized controlled trials.
- STROBE for observational studies.
- PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- SPIRIT for clinical trial protocols.
- STARD for diagnostic accuracy studies.
- CARE for case reports.
- SRQR or COREQ for qualitative research.
- ARRIVE for animal research.
- SQUIRE for quality improvement studies.
- CHEERS for health economic evaluations.
Authors may consult the EQUATOR Network to identify reporting guidelines appropriate to their study designs.
Headings, Tables, and Figures
Headings must be concise and hierarchically consistent. First-level headings and subheadings must follow the styles specified in the latest JIIM article template.
Figures must be clear, legible, numbered consecutively, and accompanied by informative captions. Authors must submit original files or the highest-quality available exports. Image manipulation is permitted only when it does not alter scientific meaning. Clinical images that could identify patients require appropriate consent for publication.
Tables must be numbered consecutively, include concise titles, and be understandable without unnecessary repetition in the main text. Abbreviations and symbols must be explained in table notes. Whenever possible, tables must be editable rather than submitted solely as images.
References
The reference list must include only sources cited in the manuscript and must be accurate and complete. References must follow APA Style, 7th edition , unless the journal officially adopts a different reference style in the future.
Authors are responsible for verifying bibliographic information and ensuring that references are not fabricated, that retracted articles are not cited without appropriate context, and that citations are not added solely to manipulate citation metrics.
JIIM Article Template
Authors must prepare their manuscripts using the latest JIIM Article Template (.docx) available on the journal's website. Manuscripts that fail to meet essential template, reporting, ethical, or formatting requirements may be returned for technical revision before peer review.
