Generative AI Policy

Mukaddimah: Jurnal Studi Islam

Kopertais Wilayah III D.I. Yogyakarta

1. Purpose

This Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) policy aims to provide clear guidelines for authors, editors, and other parties involved in the publication process at Jurnal Mukaddimah. This policy is established to ensure that the use of AI technology in the writing, editing, and development of scholarly manuscripts is conducted ethically, transparently, responsibly, and in accordance with the principles of academic integrity.

This policy also aims to uphold the originality of scholarly work, information accuracy, the validity of references, and the accountability of every published article. The use of AI must not replace the intellectual responsibility of the authors, nor should it diminish the quality standards and publication ethics applicable at Jurnal Mukaddimah.

2. General Principles

Jurnal Mukaddimah permits the limited and responsible use of generative AI to support academic activities, such as improving grammar, language editing, translation, organizing ideas, and technical assistance in data processing. Such usage must remain under human oversight and must not compromise originality, scientific accuracy, transparency, or research integrity.

Generative AI cannot be considered an author or a party responsible for a scholarly work. The entire content of the manuscript—including academic claims, analysis, interpretation, data, and references—remains the sole responsibility of the authors. Authors are required to verify all AI-generated outputs and ensure that the manuscript is free from plagiarism, data fabrication, fictitious references, copyright infringement, or misleading information.

3. Permitted Uses of AI for Authors

Authors submitting to Jurnal Mukaddimah are allowed to use generative AI as a technical assistance tool in the article writing process, including checking grammar, language editing, translation, improving readability, transcription, and organizing information. The use of AI to assist in developing ideas or analysis must also remain under the author's intellectual control, ensuring that every argument, interpretation, and conclusion is grounded in academic reasoning and verifiable sources.

Authors are strictly prohibited from using AI to generate or manipulate research data, create fictitious references or citations, commit plagiarism, disguise works that are not the result of their intellectual contribution, or make baseless academic claims. AI must not be listed as an author or as a entity bearing academic responsibility for the article. Authors retain full responsibility for the authenticity and entire content of the manuscript submitted to the journal.

4. Requirements for Disclosing AI Usage

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI if the technology makes a substantive contribution to the preparation, development, translation, analysis, interpretation, or creation of materials included in the manuscript. Disclosure must be made in a dedicated section titled "Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies" or another section designated by the editor. This declaration must state the name of the AI tool used, the purpose of its use, and the specific section or stage of work assisted by the technology.

The use of basic tools for spell-checking, grammar editing, or formatting that does not affect the scientific substance does not require disclosure, unless otherwise specified by the editor. Authors must review and verify all AI outputs prior to incorporating them into the manuscript, including the accuracy of citations, references, data, and interpretations. Declaring the use of AI does not lessen the authors' responsibility for the article's content, nor does it guarantee acceptance for publication.

5. Editorial Review

The Editors of Jurnal Mukaddimah reserve the right to assess compliance with the generative AI policy during initial screening and manuscript review. Assessments are based on academic integrity, originality, scholarly relevance, source accuracy, transparent disclosure, and alignment with the journal's focus and scope. If non-compliant AI usage is identified, editors may request clarification, an explanation of the manuscript preparation process, or revisions to the sections in question.

Editorial decisions must not be based solely on automated AI detection tools, as these tools can produce inaccurate indications. Editors are required to conduct a proportional evaluation based on available evidence while maintaining manuscript confidentiality. The use of AI by editors or reviewers must not substitute human professional judgment, and unpublished manuscripts must not be entered into public AI tools where such actions risk violating confidentiality or intellectual property rights.

6. Handling AI Misconduct

In cases of suspected AI misconduct—such as dishonest disclosure, fabrication of data or references, manipulation of research findings, plagiarism, or presenting unverified AI outputs as verified scientific findings—the editors of Jurnal Mukaddimah will conduct an investigation based on available evidence. Authors will be given an opportunity to provide clarification and, if necessary, submit relevant supporting documentation. The entire process will be handled objectively, fairly, proportionally, and in accordance with established scientific publication ethics.

If a violation is confirmed, the journal may request revisions, reject the manuscript, halt the publication process, or take corrective action regarding published articles, including issuing corrections or retractions depending on the severity of the offense. In serious cases, the journal may take further steps in line with applicable publication ethics guidelines. All decisions must be grounded in adequate investigation and aimed at maintaining academic integrity and public trust in scholarly publishing.
