Aims and Scope

Panangkaran: Jurnal Penelitian Agama dan Masyarakat is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on religion, society, and the humanities. The journal provides a forum for theoretically informed, empirically grounded, and methodologically rigorous scholarship that examines the complex relationships between religion and contemporary social, cultural, intellectual, political, and technological transformations.

The journal welcomes original research articles, comparative studies, and critical scholarly inquiries that contribute substantially to the understanding of religion and its intersections with social and human life. Particular attention is given to studies that engage with emerging issues, develop innovative theoretical perspectives, employ robust research methodologies, and contribute to broader international debates in the study of religion and society.

The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to:

  • Religion, Society, and Social Change — religion and social transformation, religious communities, social movements, pluralism, religious diversity, identity, and social cohesion;

  • Religion, Media, and Digital Culture — digital religion, social media, religious communication, media representation of religion, digital communities, and the transformation of religious practices in the digital age;

  • Religion and Education — religious education, educational transformation, pedagogy, curriculum, religious literacy, and the relationship between religion, education, and society;

  • Religion, Culture, and Heritage — religious traditions, cultural practices, memory, heritage, literature, history, and the construction and negotiation of cultural identities;

  • Religion, Science, and Knowledge — interactions between religion and science, knowledge production, epistemology, technology, and contemporary intellectual debates;

  • Religion, Politics, and Public Life — religion and citizenship, public discourse, governance, political participation, civil society, and the role of religion in public affairs;

  • Gender, Religion, and Society — gender relations, religious discourse, women and religion, masculinity, family, and the social construction of religious identities;

  • Religion, Environment, and Sustainability — religious perspectives on environmental issues, ecological ethics, climate change, sustainability, and human–environment relations; and

  • Contemporary and Comparative Studies of Religion — comparative approaches to religious traditions, transnational religious phenomena, migration, globalization, and emerging forms of religiosity.

Panangkaran: Jurnal Penelitian Agama dan Masyarakat particularly encourages submissions that move beyond descriptive accounts of religious phenomena and offer significant theoretical, methodological, or empirical contributions to the international study of religion and society. The journal welcomes interdisciplinary and comparative scholarship from diverse geographical and cultural contexts, with particular interest in research engaging the experiences and transformations of religion in Asia and the Global South.

The journal does not limit its scope to a particular religious tradition, geographical region, or methodological approach. Contributions may employ qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, historical, comparative, ethnographic, textual, digital, or other rigorous research methodologies, provided that they demonstrate clear scholarly significance and methodological integrity.
