The study sought to explore the changes of Yogyakarta’s Gedhe Kauman Mosque. To gain further understand this topic, the study uses qualitative methods with a narrative approach. The study data on the change of the Kauman Gedhe Mosque refers to literature sources. This study shows that what has been seen as an icon of the sultanate as one of the special region in Indonesia has metamorphosed. This change is not only a center for Islamic religious ritualization, but also a tourism destination. This is evidenced by the presence of historical artifacts—a collection of historical layouts, architecture that is still thick with ancient Javanese, the origin of the Muhammadiyah organization to become a source of sustenance for residents because of religious activities that invite a number of tourists. The relevance of these findings indicates that the preservation of artifacts is strength in appreciating historical heritage– both tangible and intangible– and the sustainability of religious tourism-based development. It has implications for patterns and ways of how religious ritualization becomes a symbol of the power of cultural preservation.
