About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) focuses on disseminating research on social and religious issues within Muslim society, particularly those related to strengthening civil society across various dimensions. Additionally, JSR receives articles based on literature reviews aimed at developing integrated sociological theories with Islamic Studies, such as discourses on prophetic social sciences, women in Islam, rituals, traditions, and other related perspectives.

JSR also invites academics to write critical book reviews on topics related to Sociology. Books should cover themes relevant to the field, such as new approaches in Sociology or current issues in the discipline.

Peer Review Process

All submitted article will be independently reviewed by at least two appointed reviewers, using form of "double-blind review". This reviewing process usually takes 6-8 weeks from the date of submission. Results of this reviewing process will be categorized into three groups: (1) accepted with minor or without revision; (2) accepted with major revision; and (3) rejected. All articles with major revision will be sent back to authors to be revised within 1-2 weeks from the date when editor sent it back to the authors. In making final decision process, the third reviewer could be appointed, if necessary.

As clearly stated on the author guidelines, our reviewers will be focusing on the detailed following points:

  • Does the introduction provide sufficient background, identify a clear research gap, and state the focus and objectives of the study?

  • Is the methodology section detailed, including the type of research, justification for the chosen design, data collection and analysis techniques, and theoretical framework (if applicable)?

  • Are the findings presented clearly and discussed in relation to relevant theories and literature, with critical reflection or suggestions for further research?

  • Does the conclusion effectively summarize the findings, highlight key discussion points, and explain the study’s contribution to the field while acknowledging its limitations?

Journal History
Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) was published in 2006 (Vol. 1 No.1, October). The purpose of the first publication of JSR was to provide a journal for lecturers at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, particularly in the Sociology Study Program, and record traces of the development of sociological theories that were very dynamic. In 2013, JSR started publishing one (1) up to two (2) articles in English, furthermore in 2017 JSR has been indexed by DOAJ and has started to recruit more reviewers and editors from other countries.

In 2022, the website design theme of Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) was authentically created. All visual elements—including the color scheme, layout structure, feature design, and logo—were independently developed to reflect the unique philosophy and identity of JSR. If there are similarities in the appearance of other journals that emerged afterward, it is highly likely that those journals have adapted or imitated elements of the design that are the original and authentic property of JSR.

In 2024, Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) rolled out several key updates, including an expansion of its aims and scope to include book reviews. The templates for articles and book reviews were redesigned to be more informative, along with revisions to various aspects of the author guidelines.

A significant development in 2024 was the change in JSR’s leadership. In December, Dr. Astri Hanjarwati, M.A., was appointed Editor-in-Chief, succeeding the late Achmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D., who sadly passed away earlier that year.
