Abstract
Objective – This study aims to analyze the implementation of the habituation model in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning as a strategy to improve the character of discipline, empathy, and responsibility among fifth-grade elementary school students. This research was motivated by a research gap concerning the limited number of classroom action research (CAR) studies that directly examine character habituation within PAI subjects, as well as the lack of studies focusing on improving three character dimensions—discipline, empathy, and responsibility—simultaneously through habituation strategies in public elementary schools.
Method – The study employed the Kemmis & McTaggart classroom action research model conducted in two cycles, involving 30 fifth-grade students of SD N Sungapan. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews, and analyzed using both quantitative-descriptive and qualitative approaches.
Results – The findings show that implementing habituation activities such as salat dhuha, salat dzuhur in congregation, tadarus of juz ‘amma, queuing culture, greeting culture, and self-reflection significantly improved students’ character. Discipline increased by 22%, empathy by 18%, and responsibility by 25% from Cycle I to Cycle II. These results indicate that the habituation model is an effective strategy that has not been widely explored in PAI-based CAR studies, and its consistent implementation has a strong influence on students’ character formation in daily school activities.
