Pendidikan agama Islam, suatu usaha untuk membina dan mengasuh peserta didik, agar dapat memahami ajaran Islam secara menyeluruh, menghayati tujuan, dan pada akhirnya dapat mengamalkan serta menjadikan Islam sebagai pandangan hidup. Tujuan pembelajaran PAI untuk menumbuh kembangkan aqidah Islam dan mewujudkan manusia Indonesia taat beragama dan berakhlaq mulia. Pendekatan pembelajaran PAI secara tematik menjadi urgen. Karena itulah, pola yang dapat diakomodir adalah menetapkan tema-tema dalam lingkup PAI, meliputi: AI Qur'an, Aqidah, Fikih, Akhlak, dan SKI.
