Plagiarism Policy

1. Policy on Plagiarism Screening

Jurnal Moderasi: The Journal of Ushuluddin, Islamic Thought, and Muslim Societies is committed to maintaining academic integrity and preventing plagiarism in scholarly publishing. All submitted manuscripts may be screened using Turnitin or other appropriate similarity-checking tools as part of the journal’s initial editorial assessment.

The journal applies a maximum similarity index of 20%, excluding the reference list, as a screening guideline before a manuscript proceeds to peer review. This threshold is not an automatic indicator of plagiarism or originality. Editorial assessment also considers the nature, location, context, and source of the matching text. A manuscript with a similarity index below 20% may still contain plagiarism, while a higher score may result from legitimate quotations, commonly used terminology, or other properly attributed material.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts are original, that all sources are properly acknowledged, and that quotations, paraphrases, translations, and adaptations comply with accepted academic standards.

2. Forms of Plagiarism

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the following practices:

a. Direct plagiarism

Copying words, sentences, paragraphs, or other material from another source without appropriate quotation, attribution, or citation.

b. Substantial plagiarism

Reproducing a substantial part of another author’s work, argument, structure, findings, or intellectual contribution without proper acknowledgment. Substantiality may concern the quantity or significance of the material used.

c. Paraphrasing plagiarism

Restating another author’s ideas, arguments, or findings in different words without citing the original source. Changing the wording does not remove the obligation to acknowledge the source.

d. Plagiarism of ideas and intellectual contributions

Using another person’s original ideas, interpretations, research findings, theoretical frameworks, or other scholarly contributions without appropriate attribution, even when the original wording is not reproduced.

e. Self-plagiarism and redundant publication

Reusing substantial parts of one’s own previously published work without proper acknowledgment or without making a sufficiently clear and meaningful distinction between the earlier and current publications. Authors must disclose relevant overlap with their previous publications and cite their earlier work appropriately.

f. Duplicate publication

Submitting or publishing substantially the same manuscript in more than one journal or publication venue without appropriate disclosure and editorial permission where applicable. A manuscript under consideration by Jurnal Moderasi must not be simultaneously submitted to another journal.

The legitimate reuse of methods, standard terminology, or previously published material does not automatically constitute plagiarism. However, any reuse must be transparent, appropriately cited, and consistent with publication ethics and applicable copyright requirements.

3. Editorial Assessment and Actions

When a similarity report or other evidence raises concerns about possible plagiarism, the editorial team will assess the relevant passages and sources rather than relying solely on the similarity score.

Depending on the nature and severity of the concern, the journal may request clarification or revision from the authors, return the manuscript for correction, reject the manuscript, or undertake further investigation when necessary. If serious plagiarism or publication misconduct is identified after publication, the journal may publish a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction in accordance with its publication ethics policies.

Authors are expected to cooperate with editorial inquiries and provide accurate information about the originality, sources, and publication history of their manuscripts.

4. Authors’ Responsibilities

By submitting a manuscript to Jurnal Moderasi, authors confirm that the work is original, that all sources have been properly acknowledged, and that the manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Authors must ensure that quotations, paraphrases, translations, adaptations, and reused materials are appropriately attributed. Any substantial overlap with their own previously published work must be disclosed to the editorial office at submission.
