Author Guidelines

Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure that you have carefully reviewed the JSR Aim and Scope and followed the JSR manuscript template available in the Article Template

Please read these instructions carefully and adhere to them strictly to facilitate an efficient and timely review and publication process. The editors reserve the right to reject submissions that do not comply with these guidelines.

Please note: Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) does not offer a fast-track or expedited peer review service. All submissions are processed through the journal's standard editorial and peer review procedures in accordance with its established policies and publication ethics. JSR does not provide preferential treatment or accelerated review upon request. All manuscripts are evaluated based on their scholarly merit, relevance to the journal's aims and scope, and compliance with editorial and ethical standards.

Manuscripts may be rejected without external peer review if they fall outside JSR's scholarly aims and scope or if the preliminary editorial assessment determines that they are unlikely to meet the journal's academic and publication standards.

ARTICLE RESEARCH

To increase the publication quality of Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR), started from October 2024, authors must follow some new regulations. JSR is published two editions annually in April and October, in which there are only selected articles will be published in each issue.

All articles must be submitted to JSR editorial office by online submission at:  Submission where the author registers as author and/or offers as Reviewer. If authors have any problems with the online submission, don't hesitate to get in touch with JSR editorial office at the following contact: adminjsr

Any articles submitted in this journal should be scientific (empirical research articles or literature review), original, and have not been published and/or sent to any journal or media. The author should sign the statement letter that strengthens this issue by confirming the submission checklist.

The article's content relates to the focus and scope of Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR).

The manuscript must be written in English or Bahasa Indonesia, using clear, accurate, and academically appropriate language. Authors submitting manuscripts in Bahasa Indonesia must agree to have their articles translated into English after completing the revision process and receiving acceptance for publication in Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR), by selecting one of the following options:

Option 1: Independent Professional Translation

The author agrees to arrange the English translation through a certified professional translation agency of their choice. All translation costs shall be borne by the author.

Option 2: JSR Professional Translation Service

The author agrees to have the manuscript translated into English by a JSR-appointed certified professional translator with an academic background in the social sciences, ensuring linguistic accuracy and appropriate sociological terminology. This translation service is provided free of charge, with no costs incurred by the author.

The article must be at least 5,000 words in length, typed in Microsoft Word using Book Antiqua, 12-point font, with 1.5 line spacing on A4-sized paper.

Due to the double-blind review policy, the author must remove any trace of identification such as name(s) and e-mail address in the submitted manuscript file.

The author submits the manuscript through the Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif OJS portal.

General structure of paper must follow these:

The title:

The title of the paper, all in bold, capitalized each word, and centered.

The abstract:

The abstract must be written in English and Bahasa Indonesia. The abstract and abstrak is written in one paragraph with single space and the maximum length is 250 words. The abstract and abstrak must be straightforward and contains four aspects of logical reasoning such as the research background, the objectives, methodology, finding, and implication of research.

Introduction:

·       Your text is in 12pt font-size, 1.5 line-spacing; don’t add space before and/or after paragraph. It is much better to not format your text in a specific technique, instead, just leave it plain except that you really need to type certain words in a “special method”, or to emphasize certain word or words. Italic is a must in typing non-English word. However, if the manuscript in Bahasa Indonesia, italic is a must in typing non-Indonesian word.

·       Please elaborate more thoroughly on the background of your paper by positioning your research within the broader academic field. A strong literature review is essential—not merely a list of previous works, but a critical engagement with the most relevant and recent scholarly debates. This section should show how your study is informed by, extends, or challenges existing knowledge. Discuss how your research relates to key themes, methods, or findings in previous high-quality, peer-reviewed journal publications.

·       Your literature review should clarify what has already been studied in relation to your topic, identify the conceptual gaps, inconsistencies, or underexplored areas in existing literature, and position your study as a response to those gaps to justify its academic contribution. It is recommended to structure the review thematically or analytically rather than chronologically, and to cite relevant works—preferably from the last 5 to 10 years—published in high-impact journals to demonstrate the novelty and relevance of your research.

·       To put it another way, please ensure your background and literature review clearly lead to the formulation of your research question by addressing two key points: (1) why your research question is important and worth investigating, particularly in light of existing social, theoretical, or empirical gaps; and (2) how your research relates to previous studies—whether by building upon, challenging, or filling the gaps they left—and how your findings will contribute new insights or implications to the existing body of scholarship. This will help establish a strong justification for your study and clarify its relevance within the broader academic discourse.

Methodology:

·       The research methods section should provide a comprehensive explanation of the research design and its rationale. Clearly state the type of research used—whether qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods—and explain why this approach is appropriate for addressing the research problem. The justification for choosing the specific method should be logically linked to the research objectives and the nature of the data required.

·       Next, describe the data collection techniques in detail. Specify how the data were gathered, the number of informants or sources involved, and the criteria or sampling techniques used for their selection. For studies employing literature review or secondary data, clearly explain the inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as the databases, keywords, and time frames used to obtain the relevant materials. The description should be detailed enough to ensure transparency and replicability.

·       Then, elaborate on the data analysis techniques employed. Even in literature-based research, the method of analyzing the data or texts must be explicitly described—such as thematic analysis, content analysis, discourse analysis, or comparative analysis. The explanation should demonstrate how the analysis was conducted to derive credible and valid findings.

·       Note that in some studies, the use of a theoretical framework is necessary to guide the analysis. If your research is based on or utilizes a particular theory, please include it in this section to clarify how the theory supports the interpretation and analysis of data. However, if your study does not employ a specific theory, it is not necessary to include one in the methodology section.

Result and Discussion:

·       The author should explain the results of research (what was discovered) in detail. The research result and discussion section contain results of the research findings and their ensuing discussions.

·       The findings acquired from the results of the conducted research should be written with the supplementary support of adequate data. The research results and findings should be able to resolve or provide explanations to the question stated in the introduction.

Conclusion:

The conclusion should summarize the key findings of the research, reflect on their broader sociological significance, and acknowledge any limitations of the study. It should also offer recommendations for future research and highlight the practical or theoretical implications of the findings.

Acknowledgment (Optional):

Authors may include a separate ACKNOWLEDGMENT section immediately after the CONCLUSION to recognize individuals or institutions that provided support or assistance during the research or writing process but do not qualify for authorship. This section should only be included when necessary. If there are no acknowledgments to report, authors should omit this section entirely.

Disclosure:

The DISCLOSURE section should appear after the ACKNOWLEDGMENT, if included, or directly after the CONCLUSION otherwise. Authors should disclose relevant information concerning research transparency, ethical compliance, and the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), where applicable.

Any use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies must comply with JSR's Generative AI Policy. Authors should disclose relevant AI assistance in preparing the manuscript. If AI tools were used as part of the research methodology, their use, purpose, and procedures must be explained in the METHODOLOGY section rather than solely in the Disclosure section.

For research involving human participants or animals, authors must disclose the relevant ethical approval or clearance information, where applicable, and submit supporting ethical clearance documentation as a separate file during the manuscript submission process, in accordance with JSR's Ethical Clearance Policy.

References:

This section lists all the references cited in the text. Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif uses The American Sociological Association 6th edition style.  Citation and reference systems must use the Reference Management System such as Mendeley, EndNote, Zotero.

References must consist of at least 80% scholarly journal articles, preferably published within the last 5–10 years, with more than 50% of the total references drawn from Scopus-indexed journals. The remaining 20% may consist of scholarly books published within the last 10 years. All references must be directly relevant to the research topic and contribute to the theoretical, methodological, or empirical foundation of the study.

Please note: JSR does not require or encourage authors to cite articles previously published in the journal. Authors may cite JSR publications when they are genuinely relevant to their research topics and contribute meaningfully to their scholarly arguments. JSR strongly discourages irrelevant, unnecessary, or artificially inserted citations, including citations intended solely to increase the journal's citation metrics. Such practices undermine academic integrity, distort scholarly knowledge production, and constitute unethical citation manipulation. All references must be selected based on their scholarly relevance and intellectual contribution, rather than the journal in which they were published.

All entries in the reference list must include active hyperlinks, preferably through Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) or official publisher URLs, to ensure accessibility, traceability, and verification of the cited sources. All citations and references must follow the American Sociological Association (ASA) Style Guide, 7th Edition (2022).

BOOK REVIEW GUIDELINES

Book reviews submitted to Jurnal Sosiologi Reflektif (JSR) are managed by the JSR Book Review Editor:

Izak Y.M. Lattu, Ph.D.
Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Indonesia

Authors must prepare their submissions in accordance with the official JSR Book Review Template, including its prescribed structure and formatting requirements.

While the organization of the discussion may vary depending on the nature of the book, each review should include:

  1. A concise summary of the book's central arguments and key contributions;
  2. A critical evaluation of the book's strengths, limitations, and substantive arguments, supported by relevant scholarly perspectives;
  3. Where applicable, a discussion of the book's theoretical and methodological contributions, situated within broader sociological debates and existing scholarship.

Book reviews must go beyond descriptive summaries and demonstrate critical engagement with the book's arguments, evidence, and scholarly contributions.

Similar to research articles, all book review submissions undergo a double-blind peer review process, with reviewers appointed by the Book Review Editor. Authors are required to address reviewers' comments and revise their submissions accordingly.
